The Complete Peter Rabbit Box Set

Twenty-three small green books, bound the way Beatrix and Frederick Warne first imagined them in 1902 — pictorial paper boards, rounded backs, the same trim size she insisted on for over a century. This is the complete library, end to end, in one slipcase: every book from *The Tale of Peter Rabbit* (1902) to *The Tale of Little Pig Robinson* (1930), in publication order, exactly as Beatrix wrote them.

It is the gift Beatrix would have given. She believed in the small format. "I feel convinced that children would prefer the same familiar size, and as little change as may be," she wrote to her publisher. The shelf you assemble here is the same shelf that has sat in nurseries for four generations.

Twenty-three small books is roughly twenty hours of bedtime reading. Roughly forty thousand words. Roughly four hundred watercolours. A whole world, in one slipcase, on one quiet shelf.

Curiosities

  • Beatrix designed the original small format to fit a child's hand. She refused larger sizes from her publisher when offered: "I am getting a little cramped with those small drawings; I want to put too much in them — but no, the size is right."
  • The slipcase preserves the books in publication order — letting you watch Beatrix's style evolve from Peter Rabbit (1902) through Hill Top (1907 onwards) to Pigling Bland (1913) and finally the late, sea-blown Little Pig Robinson (1930).
  • The complete set runs to roughly forty thousand words — about the length of a single short novel — but contains roughly four hundred watercolour illustrations.
  • The first complete set was assembled by Frederick Warne in 1931, the year after Little Pig Robinson completed the canon. Box sets in this format have been available almost continuously ever since.
  • The box set has been the most-given children's book gift in the English-speaking world for nearly a century — a small library that travels from godparent to godchild, generation to generation.
